RACE

categorization of humans based on skin color and other physical characteristics; racial categories are invented social and political constructions based on ideas that some biological differences (skin color) are more important than others (e.g. height, eye color, etc.).

RACIST

a person who supports racist policies through their actions (or inaction) or who expresses a racist idea

ANTIRACIST

a person who supports antiracist policies through their actions or expresses an antiracist idea

ETHNICITY

shared cultural heritage, social group that shares traditions

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION

the adoption or use of an element of one culture by members of another

IMPLICIT BIAS

the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner

POLICE BRUTALITY

the use of excessive force by police officers

RACIAL PROFILING

the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense

WHITE PRIVILEGE

a set of advantages that white people benefit from that maintains a racial hierarchy

NONVIOLENCE

the practice, inspired by Gandhi and used by Dr. King, to protest peacefully and not meet the violence of others with violence yourself

OPPRESS

(verb) to mistreat or keep someone in subservience, especially by the unjust use of authority or power

RESIST

(verb) to struggle against someone or something, either physically or ideologically
