Maine Tribes

Wabanaki, or "People of the Dawland," is the collective term for the four tribes of Maine: the Maliseet, Micmac, Penobscot, and Passamaquoddy. These tribes have been in Maine for thousands of years. This page offers an overview of the different tribes as well as opportunities to dive into specific aspects of tribal culture and history.

Storyteller John Bear Mitchell is a citizen of the Penobscot Nation from Indian Island in Maine. Maine Memory Network collected two of his tellings in audio form.
