Sparta

Founded in the 900s BC
Roman conquest of Greece in 146 BC
Known for its strong army and warrior society
Sparta was ruled by two kings who had equal power. There was also a council of five men called the ephors who watched over the kings.
Laws were made by a council of 30 elders which included the two kings.
Spartan women enjoyed a status, power, and respect that was unknown in the rest of the classical world.
