Currently, in the Mahoney Library, poetry books are in the Literature section according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system. American poetry is found under 811.

RHYME:  

 

FORM: Form refers to how the lines are organized -- lines may be short or long, lines may be organized into rhyming couples, four-line stanzas, or flow freely. Some styles of poetry have very specific forms, such as haikus, quatrains, or limericks. 

 

SOUND: Many poets use the sound of words in their poems, and may use devices such as alliterationonomatopoeia, or rhyme.

 

RHYTHM: Rhythm refers to the timing and pace of a poem. Some styles of poetry, like sonnets and haikus, have very specific rhythmic patterns, or meters, but other in other styles, poets create their own rhythm.
